What counts.

On a state record

A state filing record or the form itself was read. Counted in every total on this site.

Reported only

A news, law firm or tracker report we have not yet found in a state record. Shown, never counted.

How we found them.

1. Searched every stateWe searched every state's insurance filing portal for filings with AI in the name.
2. Opened them one by oneIn sixteen states we opened every liability and package filing since June 2025 one at a time, because many exclusions are filed under a generic name.
3. Checked every match by handEvery match was checked by hand, and false positives, such as “AI” standing for additional insured, were dropped.

What this can't tell you.

A filing makes a form available. It does not put the form on your policy.

Outside the sixteen states we read in full, we only find filings named for AI, so the list is a floor, not a ceiling.

Statuses are as read on the state portals through 16 September 2026.

Personal lines, workers' compensation and non-US filings are out of scope.

Read the full write-up

We started with public reporting on AI exclusions in commercial insurance, then moved to the state filing portals themselves, which is slower but far more complete. Every state's insurance-filing search was checked for products or forms with “AI” or “Generative” in the name, and Florida, the one state that searches by form number, was checked for every AI-related form number found elsewhere.

A name search only finds a filing whose product or form is named for AI, and most insurers file under an ordinary name, so we went further: in sixteen states we opened every commercial liability, package and medical-malpractice filing since June 2025 one at a time and read its forms. That is the only way to find an exclusion filed under a name like “General Liability” or “Businessowners.”

Every match was checked by hand. Common false positives were the letters “AI” standing for “Additional Insured” in a form number or file name, and a handful of unrelated forms whose titles happened to contain “AI” (an autonomous-vehicle amendment, an electrical-generating-equipment form, a cyber amendatory form). Filings that add AI cover rather than exclude it were kept but marked separately and never counted as exclusions.

The sixteen deep-read states are complete for the lines above. The other states were checked by name only, so a carrier that filed under a generic name there, and nowhere else, would be missed: treat the list as a floor outside those sixteen states, not a ceiling. A few carriers whose general-liability exclusions are widely reported in the press (Travelers, Chubb, Berkshire Hathaway) do not yet have a matching state filing we can point to; we list them as reported only until a filing turns up.

A second reviewer checked a sample of the read filings directly against the portal record; every tracking number, status and date matched.
